The Finca Packing List Nobody Gave You
A finca weekend in Colombia is not a hotel stay. There's no front desk, no minibar, no concierge to fetch what you forgot. The mayordomo handles meals, but everything else, from sunscreen to phone chargers to pool toys, is on you. Here's what experienced finca-goers bring.
Essential Packing List
Swimwear (2+ sets): You'll live in swimwear. A single wet bikini or shorts dries slowly in humid zones. Bring two.
Sunscreen (SPF 50+): Colombian sun at any altitude burns fast. Reapply after every pool dip. Bring a full bottle, rural tiendas may not stock it.
Insect repellent: Essential for hot-climate fincas (San Jerónimo, Santa Fe, Melgar). Mosquitoes peak at dusk. DEET-based repellent works best.
Cash (COP): Rural areas are cash-dependent. Bring COP 200,000–400,000 for mayordomo tips, local purchases, and activities. ATMs near fincas are unreliable.
Phone charger + portable battery: Rural finca outlets can be limited, especially in older properties. A portable battery keeps you covered.
Comfortable shoes: Finca grounds are often uneven, grass, gravel, mud after rain. Bring something between flip-flops and hiking boots.
Light jacket or hoodie: For highland fincas (El Retiro, Eje Cafetero, Villa de Leyva), nights drop to 10–14°C. Essential.
Things People Forget
Pool toys: Inflatable floats, water guns, pool noodles. Most fincas don't supply them. COP 15,000–30,000 at any Colombian supermarket keeps kids (and adults) entertained all weekend.
Speaker: Finca life runs on music. A portable Bluetooth speaker is practically mandatory for the Colombian finca experience.
Groceries: Stop at Éxito, D1, or Justo y Bueno on the drive. The mayordomo cooks, but you supply the ingredients. Shopping en route saves 50–70% compared to restaurants.
Card games / board games: Rainy afternoons happen. Colombian finca culture includes a strong game tradition, bring playing cards at minimum.
Medications: Rural pharmacies are sparse. Bring any prescriptions, plus basics: ibuprofen, antihistamines, anti-diarrheal, bandages.
