Christmas & New Year: Colombia's Biggest Finca Season

From December 15 through January 15, Colombia's finca market enters its highest-demand period of the year. Prices spike 80–100% above base rates, availability evaporates weeks in advance, and every family with access to a finca is heading to the countryside. If you're planning to rent a finca for Navidad or Año Nuevo, you need to start early, budget generously, and understand the cultural context.

The Colombian Holiday Calendar at the Finca

December 7 — Día de las Velitas (Day of the Little Candles): Colombians light candles and lanterns on windowsills, balconies, and porches to honor the Immaculate Conception. At a finca, this becomes a magical evening of candlelight around the pool and garden. Many families kick off the holiday season here.

December 16–24 — Novenas de Aguinaldos: Nine nights of prayer, singing, and food leading up to Christmas Eve. Colombian families gather nightly at the finca, sing traditional villancicos, and share buñuelos, natilla, and empanadas. The mayordomo typically helps prepare the nightly feast.

December 24 — Nochebuena: The main event. Colombian Christmas is celebrated on the 24th, not the 25th. Expect a late-night feast (lechona, tamales, buñuelos), fireworks at midnight, and gift-opening. A finca's outdoor space makes the fireworks viewing spectacular.

December 31 — Año Nuevo: New Year's Eve rivals Nochebuena for celebration intensity. The midnight tradition includes eating 12 grapes (one for each wish), wearing yellow underwear for good luck, and running around the block with a suitcase for travel in the new year. At a finca, this all happens poolside.

Booking Strategy for December–January

Book 2+ months ahead: The best fincas for Christmas and New Year are booked by October. Popular regions (Guatapé, Melgar, San Jerónimo) sell out first.

Expect minimum stays: Many finca owners require 3–7 night minimums during the holiday season. Single-night bookings are virtually impossible.

Budget for the full package: A finca that costs $150/night in March will cost $270–300/night over Christmas. A $300/night property becomes $540–600. Factor this into your budget from the start.

Alternative strategy: Book the week of January 2–8, immediately after the New Year rush. Prices drop back toward normal, most Colombians have returned to work, and you get the finca to yourself at near-base rates.
